About Counsel for Justice

Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is a nonprofit legal services organization providing free civil legal assistance to LA County residents with a focus on survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and tenants facing eviction. CFJ delivers legal services through a mix of staff-run programs and volunteer attorney clinics, working closely with community partners and the court. Our work is grounded in ensuring access to justice, collaboration, and respect for the people we serve.

Position Overview

CFJ is seeking a Paralegal – Domestic Violence Project to provide services to individuals seeking restraining orders in Los Angeles County. This position reports to the Directing Attorney and works closely with project staff, volunteers, court personnel, and community partners as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team.

The Paralegal – Domestic Violence Project supports CFJ’s courthouse-based restraining order clinic at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. The clinic provides legal information and self-help assistance to self-represented litigants primarily seeking domestic violence restraining orders. The Paralegal assists with intake, screening, forms preparation, court procedures, referrals, clinic workflow, volunteer support, and program data and administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake, screening, and triage for litigants seeking restraining orders.
  • Assist self-represented litigants with forms, court procedures, and available resources.
  • Provide referrals to legal and community-based services.
  • Assist with supporting volunteers on clinic procedures, workflow, and forms preparation.
  • Maintain accurate client records and service data in LegalServer.
  • Support program reporting, resource maintenance, and other administrative needs.
  • Provide services using a trauma-informed, individual-centered approach.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the role.

 

Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates must have one of the following:
  1. Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program; or
  2. A. or B.S. degree with 1 year experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervision of a licensed California attorney with a letter certifying the experience.
  • Prior experience working with survivors or in a Courthouse setting a plus.
  • Bilingual fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish is required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and litigant-service skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to use business communication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.

Work Environment, Compensation, and Benefits

  • This is a regular, full-time, nonexempt position with a 36.25 hour workweek. Compensation is $25-$35 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • This is an in-person position located at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Downtown Los Angeles.
