CCSLS was established in 1976 and incorporated in 1986. Previously known as Contra Costa Legal Assistance for the Elderly and the Senior Paralegal Program, the name was changed in 1994 to Contra Costa Senior Legal Services.

CCSLS seeks to provide the broadest possible access to its services in order to resolve legal problems that adversely affect basic needs associated with advancing age. CCSLS gives priority to cases in those areas of law particularly relevant to the needs of the elderly and not otherwise addressed by other legal services programs. Currently, CCSLS serves approximately 1,000 seniors per year with direct legal services and hundreds more through our outreach and educational programs.

CCSLS is a recipient of IOLTA and Equal Access Funds, and is also supported by the Area Agency on Aging, Contra Costa County Bar Association (recipient of the Bar Fund in 2013) , the Contra Costa County Community Development Block Grant Consortium, and CDBG grants from the Cities of Antioch, Pittsburg and Walnut Creek.
