Organization description

LAAC is the statewide membership organization for legal aid nonprofits. These nonprofits provide free legal services to low-income people, seniors, and people with disabilities. LAAC serves its members by (i) engaging in strategic legislative and administrative advocacy; (ii) providing training in core substantive areas; and (iii) facilitating productive, interorganizational collaboration. As low-income people struggle with life issues, LAAC supports the legal safety net by working to secure funding, encouraging collaboration between organizations, and facilitating communication.

Job Summary

The Training and Communications Senior Associate plays a key role in running LAAC’s training program, through implementing year-round trainings designed for legal aid attorneys and advocates both in person and online. This position also serves on the communications team, running many of LAAC’s websites and implementing outreach strategies for a new online job-matching portal.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Events & Trainings (~60%)

Plan events and trainings, including all aspects of logistics and coordination, including:

  • Annual programs include: 30-40 online webinars , 5-10 online meetings for the community and, 5-10 in-person training events.
  • For each event, lead all outreach, logistics, registrations, and follow-ups, including related website content updates and reporting
  • Convey relevant data to billing team to support timely invoicing process
  • Plan trainings with lens to Racial Justice, Accessibility, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Handle related tasks, including developing workflows, documenting procedures, maintaining files, tracking attendee records for Continuing Legal Education purposes, reconciliation of data, and assisting with related grant activity

 

Communications (~35%)

Serve on Communications team, including:

  • Legal Aid Pipeline Project (~25%): Work with consultant to build an online platform to help law students understand how to get jobs in legal aid nonprofits, perform outreach to law schools, law students, recent graduates, and legal aid organizations to encourage them to use the website. Work after launch will include adding resources for supervisors and new attorneys.
  • Other websites: (10%): Maintain LAAC’s online presence,LAACOnline.org, Support legal aid community recruitment by managing our statewide job board, Manage CALegalAdvocatesDirectory.org and CALegalAidResources.org

 

Organizational Leadership (~5%)

Contribute to LAAC’s organizational mission and goals:

  • Actively participate in LAAC internal committees, meetings and activities, including organizational equity work

 

Other duties as assigned. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may be expected to perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization such as during staffing transitions. This position requires several in-person conferences and events in the Bay Area, so the ideal candidate would live within commuting distance of San Francisco.

 

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a relevant field (at least two years)
  • Project management and/or event coordination experience
  • Ability to write/edit well and produce quality publications
  • Expertise in Word, Excel, Google applications, online databases
  • Experience in template-based web pages required

 

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Experience in running projects for other nonprofits preferred
  • Previous experience working with low-income and underserved communities preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate via phone and email
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Occasional in-state travel is required and will be paid for by LAAC.
  • Must reside in California

  • DOE $36.5-$40 hour (annual salary equivalent of $60,736-66,560)
