STAFF ATTORNEY, Housing Advocacy and Eviction Defense, AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP)

ALRP seeks a Staff Attorney to join our growing HIV/AIDS Housing Advocacy Project.  The Staff Attorney will provide direct services to people living with HIV/AIDS in a variety of legal issues related to housing, with a primary focus on eviction defense litigation.  This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of San Francisco’s groundbreaking “right-to-counsel” initiative, which guarantees that every tenant facing eviction has access to full-scope legal representation. We are looking for a highly-motivated individual interested in working in a cooperative, flexible office, committed to social justice.  Salary: $75,000-80,000 DOE.  Excellent benefits.    People of color, women, those with Spanish language skills, and those with disabilities, including HIV, encouraged to apply.  Position open until filled.

General Purpose:

To provide counseling and direct, full-scope legal services to people with HIV/AIDS in matters related to housing.

Responsibilities include

• Conducting client intake interviews, giving information and advice, and making appropriate referrals.
• Engaging in all stages of unlawful detainer litigation, including: preparing first responses, investigation and discovery, motion work, stipulation compliance, litigation strategy, and full-scope representation at trial.
• Negotiating settlement agreements in unlawful detainer cases, with an emphasis on assisting clients in maintaining their housing.
• Assisting clients with administrative hearings at the San Francisco Rent Board and other agencies.
• Advocating on behalf of clients to secure reasonable accommodations, enforce habitability standards, challenge illegal rent increases, and support basic tenancy rights.
• Maintaining accurate computerized client files and preparing reports.
• Conducting community presentations and trainings on legal issues relevant to ALRP’s client population, and attending community events to increase organization visibility.
• Assisting in developing culturally sensitive trainings and materials for Panel attorneys.
• Identifying and establishing ties with other agencies that serve people with HIV/AIDS.
• General office duties, Panel attorney relations, recruitment of attorneys, supervision of law clerks.

Qualifications

• Active membership in the State Bar of California.
• Experience working with low-income individuals, people with mental health disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS, people of color, substance users, people with a history of homelessness or incarceration, and people in the LGBT community.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of team.
• Experience in litigation, negotiation, and mediation.
• Strong public speaking and writing skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work well under tight deadlines.
• Bilingual Spanish a plus.
