About the Job . . .
This position fulfills the responsibilities of two distinct roles: Pro Bono Manager and Supervising Attorney of JDC’s business/transactional law program. The position does not require practicing or supervising business/transactional law.
The Pro Bono Manager role suits a dynamic person who enjoys mobilizing people and cultivating relationships. The position represents JDC among peer groups, and works with a variety of people, including law firm partners, in-house counsel, and executive staff of other nonprofit organizations. The Pro Bono Manager understands barriers to justice for low-income people and organizes programs and volunteers to fill unmet needs. The position works with the Director/Managing Attorney of Pro Bono Legal Services to lead recruiting and retaining attorneys, law students, paralegals and interpreters who support JDC’s programs. The position appropriately markets JDC’s volunteer opportunities to maximize engagement by small and large law firms, in-house counsel, and solo practitioners. The position also oversees volunteer recognition activities. This position supervises JDC’s Volunteer Coordinator, who organizes legal clinics and supports recruitment activities.
JDC’s Community Organization Representation Project (CORP) provides business/transactional legal services to other nonprofit organizations that serve low-income communities. CORP’s Supervising Attorney does not represent organizations or teach or supervise transactional law. Rather, the position administrates the program, in which experienced business attorneys represent nonprofits in discrete, limited-scope matters. The CORP Supervising Attorney oversees client intake and volunteer attorney recruitment, evaluates matters to issue spot and refer appropriately, and manages clinics and trainings for nonprofits. The position supervises the CORP Paralegal.
Candidate must be a member of the California State Bar in good standing. Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities is preferred. Basic familiarity with common legal areas for client organizations is helpful but not required: corporate formation and governance, employment, tax, intellectual property, real estate.
