DIRECTOR

At a critical time for lower-income communities and people of color, the Public Interest Law Project (PILP) seeks a new Director to lead one of California’s premier support centers for local and regional legal services advancing justice and equity. Our work enables systemic, anti-racist advocacy to increase and preserve affordable housing, fight displacement, eliminate discriminatory zoning, support unhoused communities, and protect and expand people’s entitlement to public benefits, income support, and supportive services. Co-founded in 1996 by Michael Rawson, PILP is a State Bar-certified legal services support center advancing social and economic justice, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. We provide local legal services organizations with the expertise and capacity to engage in impact litigation, policy development, and legislative advocacy. Mike will be stepping down as Director in this, our 25th anniversary year, to concentrate on supporting PILP’s law and policy advocacy.

We are looking for an attorney with management and development experience, expertise in housing, public benefits, or related public interest field, and an enthusiasm for our mission. The position combines direct involvement in PILP’s law, litigation, and policy advocacy with a leadership role in statewide systemic change.

The Director currently supervises four experienced attorneys and an experienced Administrative Director. The Administrative Director manages finances, human resources, communications, and development efforts and supervises an experienced Office Manager and experienced Legal Assistant. The Director’s duties will balance among management, development, and legal and policy work.

 

Responsibilities

Program

  • Direct the litigation and legislative advocacy efforts of the organization.
  • Involvement in impact litigation and legislative advocacy.
  • Guide decisions on trainings and the development of PILP publications.

 

Administration

  • Represent PILP at functions and public meetings.
  • Supervise and recruit attorneys and staff.
  • Oversee Administrative Director’s efforts in addressing human resources, communications, office equipment, and lease.
  • Guide Administrative Director’s work on the budget, insurance, taxes, audits, and other financial matters.

 

Development

  • Develop and execute a fundraising and grant strategy with the Administrative Director that allows PILP to expand its program work.
  • Guide submission of donor proposals and foundation grants with Administrative Director.

 

Qualifications

  • Strong desire to advance PILP’s vision and mission.
  • Law degree and minimum of 10 years of practice.
  • Admitted to practice in California or willing to take the California Bar
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Litigation experience.
  • Proven record of leadership, collaborative management, and good judgment.
  • Excellent public speaking and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel throughout California.
  • Experience working with and a demonstrated sensitivity to persons from diverse backgrounds, as well as a genuine recognition of the role implicit bias has in society and interpersonal actions and decisions.

Salary and Benefits

  • Compensation Package: $115,000 — $138,000 (Base $115,000 salary supplemented by a 20% employer contribution to retirement, but the selected candidate may elect to convert a substantial portion to salary).
