California Legal Aid Statement in Support of Rule of Law and of Our Profession

We, the California civil legal aid community, are shocked by the ongoing attacks on the rule of law and the targeted assaults on the legal profession and the judiciary, which are aimed at undermining our Constitution and the justice system.

We, the undersigned, provide access to justice without charge to hundreds of thousands of low-income Californians in need of legal assistance. Their rights are at risk as a result of the President’s actions that aim to diminish our legal system and access to it.

Our legal system, which enshrines the right to counsel for many critical legal needs, is designed with the assumption that people have a lawyer to help them. People without attorneys must navigate difficult and complicated systems on their own.

Our community works to level the playing field and to help people have equal access to justice. The recent executive orders that attack our profession are attacking access to justice for everyone.

We call upon other members of our profession to take up this fight on behalf of their clients against the usurpation of justice and defend the rule of law.
