First prom held for gay, lesbian youth in Bakersfield

The event was a collaboration between the Gay and Lesbian Center of Bakersfield, the Dolores Huerta Foundation, and California Rural Legal Assistance. It was to celebrate the academic achievements of LGBTQ students who graduated from Junior High and High School.

“We’re basically trying to provide a safe space for them to bring whoever they want, to wear whatever they want regarding their sexual orientation and gender expression,” said Moises Duran, a volunteer and youth coordinator with the Gay and Lesbian Center.

Although the atmosphere was upbeat, there was also a sense of solidarity with the 49 victims at the massacre in Orlando.

“I kind of see it as a little bit of a tribute,” said Toni. “And I want to give my condolences to all the families who had heartbreaks.”
