Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor.  These services include litigation, training, and technical assistance, and community education.


NLSLA is seeking a Staff Attorney for Project imPACT, a new innovative city of Los Angeles program geared towards increasing opportunities for justice-involved individuals to access employment, housing, legal services and other resources through the elimination of  legal barriers resulting from prior contacts with the justice system.  The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who excels in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of NLSLA clients in multiple forums. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis. The ideal candidate must possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and well-developed analytical skills.  The candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to work independently. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish preferred.



Staff Attorney


Availability: February 1, 2020. Home office: Pacoima, CA


Compensation: Salary $60,000 + – Commensurate with experience.  Excellent Benefits which include:  choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.


Duties and Responsibilities: Staff Attorney will focus on a broad range of advocacy including litigation and administrative hearings in substantive legal issues across multiple practice areas affecting justice involved individuals and their families.  Practice areas will include: family law, housing, clearing criminal records, termination of professional licenses and appeals, public benefits, consumer, employment, immigration, and representation in other matters, as appropriate.


Staff Attorneys are also expected to conduct trainings for community partners and provide technical support and assistance to Project imPACT partners as needed, both informally and through attendance at regular case management meetings; Provide outreach and education to community groups; and assist with training and mentorship of paralegal staff and law student volunteers.  Assignments will depend upon NLSLA Program priorities. Travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters and community-based organizations throughout Los Angeles County is expected.


Minimum Qualifications: Must be licensed and eligible to practice law in California with three or more years of experience in public interest law as well as experience working with low-income organizations and client groups.  Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
