For nearly 50 years, Bet Tzedek Legal Services has provided high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents. Today, delivery of those legal services requires innovation and partnership. Bet Tzedek’s Harbor UCLA Medical Legal Partnership embodies this reality. With legal staff co-located at the medical center, Bet Tzedek works in partnership with medical professionals to holistically address community members’ social determinants of health through legal advocacy. Bet Tzedek seeks a full-time staff attorney to join this innovative team.


  • Work with medical center staff to identify and refer patients with legal assistance needs to Bet Tzedek.
  • Provide intake and assessment for potential patient clients on-site at the medical center on a weekly basis.
  • Provide advice and counsel, limited service, and full scope representation on behalf of DHS patients referred to Bet Tzedek from the medical center in a range of basic poverty law areas including housing access, public benefits (e.g., SSI/CAPI, Medi-Cal, IHSS, CalFresh, etc.), consumer debt, employment rights, expungements, advance planning (e.g., advance health care directives, financial powers of attorney, etc), family law, and immigration law.
  • Engage in outreach and education efforts focused on both medical center staff and community members.
  • Work with pro bono attorneys and in-house volunteers to address client needs.
  • Perform case management and grant compliance tasks (e.g., case opening/closing, coding, entry of case time, case reviews, etc.).


  • Active member of the California State Bar in good standing (required).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience/practice of law (required for Attorney II).
  • Willingness to train and work with volunteer attorneys and students (required).
  • Intermediate Spanish-language proficiency, including oral interpretation and written translation. (preferred).
  • Minimum one-to-two years non-profit legal services experience, or equivalent experience in housing law, public benefits, consumer debt, employment rights, expungements, advance planning, family law, or immigration law (preferred).
