Position Summary

The Staff Attorney works directly on complex naturalization and immigration cases, serving Orange County API communities for various weekday in-office and offsite weekday or weekend citizenship workshops. Primary duties assigned to the staff attorney include, but are not limited to, providing direct application assistance in naturalization cases, provide legal representation for clientele with complex naturalization cases, attending USCIS interviews as a legal representative for complex naturalization cases, conducting outreach and education for naturalization to local community based organizations and adult education centers.

This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Duties and Responsibilities

50% Provide direct assistance in naturalization and immigration cases
20% Provide extended local representation for diverse clients with complex cases before USCIS which includes attending USCIS interviews for complex clients.
10% Counsel and advise clients on naturalization, or potential other immigration relief eligibility
5% Conduct Outreach and Education, which includes attending outreach engagements with local community based organizations and adult education centers to present information sessions on Naturalization and Immigration law
5% Provide training and legal guidance to volunteers at our workshops and clinics, and conduct legal review of their cases
5% Undertake administrative and logistical duties related to direct application assistance
4% Work closely with the OC Project Director to plan and strategize culturally competent service models to address OC naturalization and immigration needs.
1% All other duties as assigned



Education and Work Experience

  • Juris Doctor graduate with excellent credentials
  • Active member in a State Bar
  • Minimum of one (1) year immigration law experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bilingual fluency in Mandarin Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Experience assisting immigrant, limited English speaking and/or low-income clients
  • Experience or familiarity with AANHPI community preferred
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients
  • Availability and willingness to regularly travel within the county and surrounding regions
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Must be self-directed, organized, comfortable working independently and have the ability to initiate and coordinate projects in a timely manner;
