Since 1958, the Legal Aid Society of Orange County and Community Legal Services (LASOC) has offered a diverse approach to the delivery of legal services. The mission of LASOC is to provide high quality, free civil legal services to low-income individuals and seniors and to promote equal access to the justice system through advocacy, legal counseling, innovative self-help, in-depth legal representation, economic development, and community education.
LASOC advocates on behalf of vulnerable individuals and communities both in Orange County and the southeast area of Los Angeles County, where it is known as Community Legal Services (CLS). LASOC currently maintains offices in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Compton and Norwalk. Generally, clients are eligible for LASOC’s services if the client’s income is at or below 125% to 200% of the federal poverty threshold or if they are over age 60. Based on the 2014 estimated poverty population, approximately 601,805 persons in LASOC’s service area have incomes that fall below 125% of the poverty level.
Description of Position
LASOC seeks a compassionate, open-minded, and dedicated Staff Attorney to join its Complex Litigation Unit in its Santa Ana, California office. This is an exciting opportunity for a conscientious litigator to work in the community, make impactful changes for clients, and advocate for equal justice. The Staff Attorney will litigate a wide-range of legal services issues, strive to make impactful changes on matters that disproportionately impact the poor, and be an integral part of a fast-paced team environment.
Build expertise in specialized legal areas such as civil rights, fair housing laws, land use, mortgage and lending practices, government benefits, due process rights and disability laws. Support the current state and federal litigation cases within the unit. Current cases address issues of homelessness, homelessness prevention, affordable housing, and government benefits. Formulate strategy on impact advocacy and policy. Lead outreach, conduct extensive investigation, handle client intake, conduct legal research, draft legal briefs, and litigate. Engage in collaborations with advocates in the LASOC program and with community partners. Comply with grant requirements, case tracking requirements, and all other administrative tasks as required of LASOC employees.
Candidates must be available and willing to conduct outreach and advocacy throughout LASOC’s service area, including to communities in southeast Los Angeles and all of Orange County, work with diverse group of clients, and collaborate with a multitude of local community groups. The position will handle both direct service and impact cases and will report to the Director of Litigation.
Minimum two years of litigation and trial experience, must be a member of the California Bar, and possess excellent legal research and writing skills. The staff attorney will have a passionate commitment to social justice for disadvantaged individuals and communities and must be able to work in a collaborative environment. Successful track record of forging alliances and moving people to take collective action. Experience can be demonstrated through prior work in legal services, housing litigation, litigation in federal court, and working with community groups. Bilingual capacity strongly preferred.
