Disability Rights California (DRC) is a statewide, non-profit legal organization dedicated to advancing the rights of Californians with disabilities.  DRC works to achieve fairness and justice for people with disabilities through individual and impact litigation, state and federal policy and regulatory advocacy, and community education and training.

The Staff Attorney II is a member of DRC’s Intake/Outreach Practice Group (PG). As a member of this PG, the Staff Attorney II will develop community- based legal clinics to underserved communities throughout California. In coordination with members of the Intake/Outreach PG, the Staff Attorney II will develop relationships with underserved communities throughout California, and in coordination with members of the Intake/Outreach PG, through training, clinics, and collaborative partnerships.

For training and clinics, the Staff Attorney II will identify training topics of interest to the various underserved communities and schedule legal clinics aimed to educate members of underserved communities about their legal rights and provide real-time information, including counsel and advice, to participants.  The Staff Attorney II will also help identify potential systemic issues by participating in community-based collaborative partnerships and providing expertise on disability rights.  These collaborations may exist among specific communities and may overlap with objectives of other PGs by identifying projects, cases, and clients that may be appropriate for larger litigation projects.

Clinic organization will entail:

  1. Identifying diverse communities throughout California that require legal assistance and developing relationships within those communities.
  2. Scheduling clinics by coordinating trainers (or providing the training).
  3. Ensuring that training and self-help materials are available at each legal clinic.
  4. Attending the legal clinics where persons with disabilities can receive training, education and counsel and advice with an attorney or advocate in their native language where necessary.

When appropriate, the Staff Attorney II will provide legal assistance to people who require support beyond counsel and advice; and they will identify and refer systemic advocacy issues to the appropriate PG.  The Staff Attorney II will also provide support to staff who are handling cases from the legal clinics.

The Staff Attorney II works under the direct supervision of a Supervising Attorney, in close collaboration with other DRC attorneys and advocates in their legal, advocacy, and outreach efforts.
