Senior Litigation Attorney

The mission of Legal Aid of Marin is to provide access to the civil justice system to low-income, vulnerable and otherwise underserved residents of Marin County, and to strive for practical solutions to client problems through quality legal service.

Brief Description of position: We seek an energetic, culturally sensitive attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to represent traditionally underserved populations, including persons who are homeless, have disabilities, and/or low-income, minority, senior, and LEP immigrant clients. The attorney will independently manage a diverse litigation caseload in the areas of housing and employment law and in other areas of law as needed.
Responsibilities will include: conducting client interviews, engaging in community education and field outreach, preparing pleadings and discovery, and negotiating with governmental agencies, employers, landlords and attorneys. The attorney will represent Legal Aid clients in administrative hearings and affirmative litigation, including multi-plaintiff and class actions, in response to client needs and when in line with LAM’s mission and resources.

The attorney will mentor LAM attorneys and legal assistants in impact advocacy, and will work in close coordination with the LAM Managing Attorney and Executive Director. Responsibilities also include keeping records as needed for purposes of measuring outcomes, grant reporting and timekeeping, developing and maintaining impact advocacy systems, and helping with agency fundraising efforts and events.

Qualifications:
• Member in good standing with the California State Bar.
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest legal practice.
• Minimum 5 years’ litigation and/or employment law experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent analytical skills.
• Strong organization skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team.
• Experience providing services to traditionally underserved populations including persons who are homeless, have disabilities, and/or low-income, minority, and immigrant clients.
• Commitment to the mission and work of Legal Aid of Marin.
• Enjoy a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
• Valid California Driver’s License required.
• Fluent in Spanish strongly preferred.

Hours and Days per Week: 40+ hours, exempt

Compensation: Salary begins at 65K based on five years’ experience. Additional years’ experience compensated at higher salary based on a scale. Legal Aid of Marin benefits include twelve holidays, vacation, sick leave, a health insurance allowance, and retirement plan participation.
