FVAP is seeking a fundraising professional to join our dynamic team for a significant development role in support of social justice.  The ideal candidate will bring unique skills and experiences that help you successfully lead a 3-year fundraising campaign focused on major gifts, with a goal of raising $2.5-$3 million over three years.  FVAP has the plan for the campaign in place after extensive work with a consultant, and we are seeking the right person to put it into action.  You will coordinate the campaign and also play a significant role in meeting donors.  You will also support the Board of Director’s fundraising efforts and provide staff support for the Board’s Development Committee.  In addition, you will coordinate production of the Annual Report.  You will join a three-person development team (including the Executive Director) that works collaboratively together to support the funding of a $2 million organization.  We value diverse experiences and backgrounds.  The immediate supervisor is the Executive Director.

About FVAP:  Family Violence Appellate Project is the only organization in California dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence with a second chance at justice by appealing court decisions on their behalf, for free.  We are a 9-year old nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure the safety and well-being of survivors and their children.  Our attorneys appeal and overturn court decisions that put survivors and/or their children at risk of ongoing abuse.  By working at the appellate court level, our cases set legal precedent that helps thousands of survivors and kids.  FVAP’s clientele is very diverse, and we serve individuals and advocates throughout the state, including rural, suburban, and urban populations.

Skills & Abilities:  The ideal candidate is an experienced development professional with experience soliciting major gifts and leading a long-term fundraising campaign.  You love talking to people and are comfortable meeting one-on-one with donors.  You have a passion for communicating to a variety of audiences and excel at making complex legal information accessible and compelling.  You inspire people to give generously.  You have a strong drive to take on new challenges and feel great satisfaction in setting and accomplishing goals.  You can manage multiple short-term and long-term deadlines at once and can lead projects to successful completion.  You have an obsession for organization and follow-through.  You have a reputation for being utterly dependable.  People look to you to accomplish tasks because they know they will get done efficiently and successfully.  You have a knack for managing and analyzing donor data.  You are filled with ideas and are eager to put them into action.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Lead 3-year fundraising campaign (60%):
    • Lead implementation of a 3-year fundraising campaign focused on major gifts, with a goal of raising $2.5-$3 million over three years;
    • Meet with donors and potential donors to cultivate and solicit contributions;
    • Prepare Executive Director and Board of Directors for donor meetings;
    • Manage campaign dashboard, donor stewardship and tracking, and analysis of next steps;
    • Create campaign collateral and other materials.
  • Donor analysis (10%)
    • Manage donation database entries and analysis of trends and data
  • Board of Directors support (10%)
    • Provide staff support for Board of Directors’ fundraising efforts, including preparing Board members for donor visits;
    • Prepare materials for and attend monthly Development Committee meetings;
    • Provide annual training for Board members on fundraising and communications.
  • Foundation grants (10%)
    • Sustain our current portfolio of about 6 private foundation grants totaling $100,000/year, including preparing renewal applications and reports and developing relationships with grant officers;
    • Investigate new grant options and recommend a strategy of whether we should pursue any new grants, especially in Washington. If so, lead efforts to apply for new grants.
  • Communications (5%):
    • Lead production of Annual Report
  • Support other development team activities (5%), including:
    • Events: Assist development team member with producing one large fundraising event each year and possibly a few smaller events to support the 3-year fundraising campaign;
    • Strategy: Work with development team member and Executive Director to steer the fundraising strategy, including staying informed of current industry best practices;
    • Communications: Assist development team member with communications as needed, such as donor materials, year-end campaign, e-newsletters, website, and social media.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Performance of duties and tasks uses standard office equipment, including telephone equipment and computers.  Work is performed inside with exposure to heating and air-conditioning.  Driving or other travel may be required.  Currently, all work is being performed from home unless you want to work in the office following COVID-19 guidelines.  When deemed safe per public health guidelines, we will move to a hybrid work model, with a probable 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home, with the option to work entirely in the office if preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in nonprofit development or similar fundraising experience;
  • Ability to lead execution of 3-year fundraising campaign. Must have excellent project management skills, including organization, attention to detail, ability to work with others, and ability to manage up and sideways;
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills;
  • Interest and talent in meeting people one-on-one, powerfully conveying the organization’s mission and the importance of supporting it;
  • Ability to create fundraising campaign visual/printed materials;
  • Experience with databases, preferably Bloomerang or other donor-relations database;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects effectively at a given time;
  • Ability to adapt to and work in the fast-paced environment of a small development team;
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to collaborate closely with others;
  • A commitment to working on behalf of survivors of domestic violence and their children; and
  • Proficiency with all standard office computer programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of experience in nonprofit development or similar fundraising experience;
  • Experience leading long-term fundraising campaigns;
  • Experience meeting one-on-one with donors;
  • Experience with Boards of Directors;
  • Experience creating annual reports or other messaging tools for an organization;
  • Experience with graphic design, including Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop or Illustrator);
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, legal aid or other legal environments; and
  • An understanding of the domestic violence field.

Classification:  The position is full-time, exempt, and at-will.

Compensation / Salary Range:  Salary will be based on experience and commensurate with comparable nonprofit development positions in King County, Washington, in the range of $68,000-$90,000.  FVAP offers a generous benefits package, including subsidized health, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance; 401(k) retirement plan with 3% employer match after 1 year; FSA plan for commuting, parking, health, and dependent care expenses; Employee Assistance Plan and travel assistance; 3 weeks paid time off/year, with longevity increases; 13 paid holidays/year; 40 hours paid sick leave, plus additional accrued sick leave; and paid continuing education.

Location:  FVAP’s Washington office through mid-2022 is located in Bellevue, Washington, within the offices of Eastside Legal Assistance Program.  In mid-2022 we may relocate within King County.  FVAP’s main office is located in Oakland, California, convenient to multiple bus lines and BART.  The preference is for candidates in the Seattle/Bellevue, Washington area, but exceptional candidates in the Bay Area, California area will be considered.  Locality pay differential if the candidate hired is in California.
