The delivery of legal services today requires innovation and partnership. Bet Tzedek’s Harbor UCLA Medical Legal Partnership embodies this reality. By deploying staff who co-locate at the medical facility, Bet Tzedek is able to work in partnership with medical professionals to holistically address community members’ social determinants of health through legal advocacy. Bet Tzedek now seeks to expand this effort through the addition of a second, ambitious junior staff attorney to the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Work with the medical center’s geriatric and maternity staff to identify and refer patients with legal needs to Bet Tzedek.
• Provide intake and assessment for potential patient clients on-site at the medical center on a weekly basis.
• Advocate on behalf of geriatric and maternity patient clients referred to Bet Tzedek from the medical center in a range of basic poverty law areas including housing access, medical and disability benefits, employment rights, and unlawful discrimination.
• Co-counsel with pro bono volunteers to represent patient clients in administrative law appeals, state and Federal litigation.
• Conduct various educational presentations and clinics on behalf of staff and patient clients.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Active member of California State Bar in good standing
• Willingness to train and work with volunteer attorneys and students (required)
• Spanish-language proficiency (required)
• Minimum one-to-two years non-profit legal services experience (preferred)
• Experience in landlord-tenant law, employment law, public benefits law, administrative law, elder law, Medicare, or Medi-Cal (preferred)
