For 45 years Bet Tzedek has set the standard for innovation and excellence in poverty law. In that tradition, Bet Tzedek’s Elder Justice work brings life-saving access to Medi-Cal benefits that provide caregiving solutions for disabled and older low-income adults and their caregivers.
Bet Tzedek seeks an attorney to provide legal services, advocacy, education, and other support to In-Home Supportive Health Services (IHSS) providers, consumers, and their families. This Staff Attorney will also work in collaboration with Bet Tzedek’s Impact Team and IHSS & Medi- Cal policy specialist to identify and execute on impact litigation and policy initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Provide representation (state hearings and writs) to clients regarding vital government benefits, including but not limited to Medi-Cal and IHSS. This necessarily includes conducting intake interviews and assessments, and working collaboratively with the other members of the Caregiver Rights team to determine case selection criteria and advocacy strategies; • In collaboration with the Pro Bono Manager, recruit, train, and supervise pro bono and law student volunteers in IHSS client representation engagements; • Present Medi-Cal, IHSS, long term care and financial planning information to members of the public, public policy makers, and other advocates; • Contribute to Impact Team strategy sessions and initiatives by providing information on client community needs and substantive legal knowledge regarding Medi-Cal and IHSS benefits. • Participate in coalition work to advance the rights of IHSS consumer and providers.
QUALIFICATIONS • Active member of the California bar, in good standing; • Demonstrated commitment to Bet Tzedek’s mission required, with meaningful experience in public interest law or public benefits preferred; and • Spanish-language proficiency (spoken and written) preferred.
