LSPC SENIOR STAFF ATTORNEY
Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (LSPC) seeks applications for a senior staff attorney position in its Oakland, California office. LSPC is a policy advocacy organization with a forty year history of advocating for the rights of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people and their families and communities. We are also a CA State Bar funded support center.
The senior staff attorney supervises staff attorneys, oversees and participates in legal trainings offered to the public and the writing and updating of our legal materials. This attorney represents LSPC at LAAC (Legal Aid Association of California) meetings, confirms compliances with State bar funding requirements, and assists the Development Director with these reports.
The senior staff attorney also engages in litigation, legislative, and administrative policy advocacy as needed; works with coalitions and task forces; and helps provide legal information and referrals to prisoners, family members, legal services organizations, and the general public. The senior staff attorney reports directly to the Executive Director.
Five years of relevant legal experience
Membership in the California Bar
Working knowledge of California prison and family law
Demonstrated commitment to racial justice
Excellent legal writing skills
Ability to work independently and under deadline pressure
Ability to think conceptually, strategically and tactically
Ability to work both independently with minimal daily supervision
Ability to work as a team player
Interest in prisoner law, restoration of civil rights, parole and legislation
Ability to supervise
This position is full-time and exempt.
Preference will be given to applicants who exhibit a personal history with communities disproportionately affected by the prison industrial complex and/or experience with prisoners’ rights movements or community organizing.
Salary: DOE and equivalent to the salaries of non-profit law firms. LSPC provides employees with an excellent benefits package that includes health, vision, dental and five weeks’ vacation annually.
