East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is a non-profit legal services organization, the community-based clinical program for U.C. Berkeley Law School, and one of the Bay Area’s largest and most effective systems disrupters.  With a dual service and teaching mission, EBCLC is a racial justice organization committed to building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on equity. With about 80 staff, 150 law students a year, and a nearly $10 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal services in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 8,000 clients annually and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the state and local level.

The Housing Intake/Program Coordinator assists with client intake and screening, and provides administrative support to staff attorneys. The position requires someone who enjoys substantial responsibilities in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with competing priorities and deadlines, who is able to work in a team and independently, excels at time management, and has strong interpersonal skills.  

 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Screen individuals, over the phone and in the office for eligibility for services, assess legal issues, and provide or coordinate appropriate assistance
  • Provide administrative support to attorneys and law students with preparation, serving, and filing of legal pleadings (including preparation of exhibits and materials) in state court
  • Initiate, coordinate, and organize outreach and trainings with community-based organizations and social service agencies
  • Enter data into client database to ensure accurate accounting of information and services disseminated as required for grant or project reporting
  • Provide translation assistance and interpret for client meetings and interviews as needed
  • Meet with clients and prepare paperwork under the supervision of attorneys
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with city and state agencies and community-based organizations
  • Assist in the facilitation of housing projects including rental assistance applications, courthouse clinic, and our tenants’ rights workshop
  • Additional tasks as assigned by Supervisor

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Docs
  • Ability to work under pressure and with people in crisis, including people with mental disabilities, in an empathetic and professionalmanner
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to be detail-oriented, multi-task, set priorities, and work independently, but in close coordination with other staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, homeless people, immigrants, non-English speakers, people with mental disabilities, people experiencing domestic violence, law students, service providers, government employees, community partners, elected officials, and law school faculty

 

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for this non-exempt position is $53,000 – $63,000, as dictated by the EBCLC salary scale.

Workplace Expectations

Due to COVID19, all EBCLC employees are currently working remotely. The Housing Intake/Program Coordinator and all EBCLC employees will continue to work remotely if California’s Shelter in Place remains in effect, and any necessary use of the office must be pre-approved. The expectation is that the Intake/Program Coordinator will work in our office in Berkeley, California when it is safe to do. EBCLC will provide the necessary equipment to fulfill the job responsibilities of working from home.
