Position Full-time Staff Attorney –Health Law Unit
  The Public Law Center (PLC)’s Health Law Unit is seeking an energetic, passionate advocate to join our team in fighting for justice for Orange County’s low-income individuals through innovative, collaborative, community-centered lawyering.

PLC’s Health Law Unit provides compassionate direct legal representation, in addition to coordinating and supervising pro bono representation in the following areas: public benefits, insurance coverage, medical billing disputes, conservatorships, end-of-life planning and other related issues for low-income families dealing with health-related issues in and near Orange County. The Unit also operates PLC’s AIDS Legal Assistance Project, providing civil legal assistance for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Description

PLC, Orange County’s pro bono law firm, works to increase access to justice and provide a voice to the county’s most vulnerable low-income communities. Now in its 39th year of service, PLC provides free civil legal services through in-house staff attorneys and a vibrant pro bono network of 1,500 volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students from throughout the county. PLC serves the community by providing counseling, individual representation, community education, and strategic litigation and advocacy in the areas of consumer law, immigration, housing and homelessness prevention, family law, health benefits, veterans’ benefits, and community-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses.
Qualifications
  • Active membership in the California State Bar
  • 1-3 years experience in public benefits (especially Medi-Cal, Medicare, SSDI, and SSI), private health insurance (e.g., Covered CA), and conservatorships preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income communities
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Strong public speaking skills and ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, from community members to pro bono attorneys
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently and as part of a team
  • Must have own transportation, valid CA Drivers license, insurance and good driving record; travel throughout Orange and neighboring counties may be necessary
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Handle a full caseload of cases on behalf of low-income Orange County residents dealing with health issues, including public benefits, insurance coverage, medical billing disputes, conservatorships, end-of-life planning and other related issues.
  • Represent clients in public benefits administrative hearings and conservatorship hearings as needed.
  • Coordinate referrals to other PLC units as needed to provide holistic legal services to low-income clients dealing with health issues
  • Participate in collaborative advocacy efforts in coalition with other legal service providers and community partners
  • Conduct community education presentations to clients, partner agencies, and service providers
  • Oversee volunteer attorneys and law students through training, technical support and general supervision
  • Participate in and help to coordinate legal clinics and workshops
  • Assist with periodic compilation of data related to grant funding
  • Represent PLC at legal networking and community outreach events
  • Full time position with occasional evening and weekend work required
Salary & Benefits
  • Compensation dependent on experience; range of $53,000 to $70,000
