FAMILY DEFENSE ATTORNEY | East Bay Family Defenders

East Bay Family Defenders (EBFD) is a new interdisciplinary family defense practice.  Our mission is to keep families together and minimize the time children spend in foster care.  We represent all parents, and some children, in cases filed by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) in Alameda County Juvenile Dependency Court.  We are hiring attorneys with a range of experience in Juvenile Dependency and/or relevant fields who seek a litigation-heavy position in an evolving area of law.  We value diverse experience that equips staff for delivering the highest quality representation to our clients.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Our attorneys are court-appointed to represent parents, who have a right to counsel in juvenile dependency court when DCFS seeks to remove their children from home or monitor their family.  Parents in these cases face allegations by DCFS ranging from neglect to abuse of children, including substance abuse, untreated mental illness, domestic violence, homelessness, lack of childcare, and other issues affecting parents’ ability or resources to care for children.  Our attorneys provide client-centered, holistic defense through an active litigation practice paired with robust out-of-court advocacy.  Attorney collaboration with in-house social work and parent advocate staff furthers our goals to reduce entries into foster care, shorten lengths of stay in foster care, promote frequent and high-quality visiting arrangements, and ensure that families receive services that are well-tailored to expediting safe and lasting reunification.  Attorneys joining EBFD can expect training on California juvenile dependency law, trauma-informed practices, and litigation skills.  EBFD is dedicated to maintaining a diverse, supportive, and sustainable work environment, and to equitably providing ongoing professional development for all staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Attorneys are responsible for representing a full caseload of clients at all stages of juvenile dependency proceedings.  Attorneys are in court almost daily, where they frequently conduct hearings and trials, often on an expedited timeline.  Attorneys provide diligent and zealous representation, including litigating contested issues, drafting motions, and filing interim writ appeals, as well as conducting out-of-court advocacy and settlement negotiation.  Attorneys must possess the organizational skills necessary to maintain an active, high caseload and the willingness to participate in developing and implementing systems that promote efficient case management.  Attorneys are expected to maintain updated case data, client legal notes, and legal files.  Attorneys may also participate in systemic advocacy, supervise law school interns, and engage in coalition-building efforts with aligned community-based agencies.

  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest issues
  • Work or life experience relevant to providing family defense representation
  • Knowledge of and experience with juvenile dependency practice preferred
