Job Overview

Community Legal Aid SoCal (CLA SoCal) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1958 for the purpose of providing civil legal services to low income individuals and seniors. Community Legal Aid SoCal (CLA SoCal) seeks a Director of Legal Services to oversee the delivery of high-quality legal services by CLA SoCal staff to eligible clients and organizations and assist the Executive Director and other management staff with overall operation of the program. The Director of Legal Services serves in a leadership role and is responsible for working closely with the community and other legal organizations, support centers and CLA SoCal’s attorneys to create a shared vision that nurtures and expand CLA SoCal’s capacity to do broad–based work, strategically focused on the pressing need of the client community. In addition, s/he coordinates legal strategy with other legal units within the program.


  • Work closely with Executive Director to develop, initiate and shape major advocacy activities, including impact litigation and administrative advocacy promoting appropriate policies and systems change;
  • Directs, monitors and coordinates CLA SoCal’s civil litigation and advocacy work;
  • Works with Executive Director and Directing/Supervising Attorneys to implement case priority guidelines and monitor resource allocations within the organization;
  • Works with Executive Director and Directing/Supervising Attorneys to develop and implement caseload standards for staff;
  • Works closely with Executive Director and Management Team to implement CLA SoCal’s Strategic Plan and Restructure;
  • Assist the Directing/Supervising Attorneys to identify training needs and to ensure appropriate training for advocacy staff (attorneys and paralegals);
  • Ensures the provision of high-quality legal services to clients;
  • Co-counsels with CLA SoCal legal staff on selected litigation;
  • Monitors and assists in case reviews;
  • Assesses and handles client grievances per established procedures;
  • May on occasion be required to assist the Executive Director and management staff with fund development, board development, networking with community-based organizations;
  • Assists with preparation of reports to the Legal Services Corporation and other funding sources;
  • In conjunction with the Directing/Supervising Attorneys, interviews and makes recommendations for the hiring of legal staff;
  • In conjunction with the Human Resources Department, may be required to develop protocols for the recruitment and retention of attorneys;
  • Assists the Executive Director to ensure compliance with all LSC and program procedures and policies;
  • Additional duties as


  • Minimum of ten years’ experience as an attorney;
  • Active member of the California Bar;
  • Minimum of five yeas’ experience in management preferred;
  • Extensive experience in practice of law and familiarity with practice in both Federal and State Courts;
  • Extensive trial and/or appellate court litigation experience;
  • Experience delivering trauma-informed services;
  • Previous legal aid or other non-profit services desirable;
  • Proven organizational skills, leadership and management skills;
  • A commitment to and ability to articulate CLA SoCal mission;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to effectively prioritize among competing tasks while maintaining attention to detail;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and administrative skills, a positive attitude and work style, and an ability to balance and initiate multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; and;

  • Supervise professional and non-professional persons in the effective handling of a civil law
  • Communicate effectively with, understand and relate to the impoverished
  • Work effectively with staff, Bar Associations, Board, client and non-client
  • Aggressively seek out and identify legal issues of common concern and impact on our client
