POSITION: Deputy Director of Community Engagement

Inland Counties Legal Services, Inc. is a non-profit 403(c) organization providing free legal services to low income persons in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. ICLS is looking for a Deputy Director of Community Engagement to manage and develop our communications fundraising department and our Private Attorney Involvement Program. ICLS is a dynamic and growing legal services organization providing free legal services to qualified individuals in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The Deputy Director of Community Engagement will report directly to the Executive Director as a member of the Senior Executive Team along with the Deputy Director of Operations, the Deputy Director of Litigation and the Chief Financial Officer.

Job Description:

The Deputy Director of Community Engagement will report to the Executive Director. The selected individual will be responsible for the implementation of the Private Attorney Involvement (Pro Bono Program). This individual will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of social media communications, to include the website and newsletter. The Deputy Director of Community Engagement will also establish training and provide support for staff in community relations.

The Deputy Director of Community Engagement, working with the Executive Director, will create and implement a plan to increase community involvement and awareness of ICLS in both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

The Director of Community Engagement will regularly meet and consult with the Senior Executive Team for support and assistance to ensure successful communication, fundraising, and private attorney involvement.


A. Purposes of Position:

As an integral part of the senior executive team, you will support and guide ICLS to become an integral organization in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. You will establish new policies and procedures to ensure ICLS follows appropriate community interactions both in media and in person interactions, providing training and guidance as needed. You will, with your team, the CFO, and grants administrator, participate in finding and applying for non-governmental grants to assist the organization. You will develop a plan to recruit and involve the private attorney bar in ICLS’s pro bono program.

B. Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee ICLS’s Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) program.
  • Create and maintain education and outreach relationships.
  • Recruit private attorneys to volunteer for ICLS’s Pro Bono Program (PAI).
  • Develop a comprehensive strategic communications plan for ICLS, including developing a plan for advancing advocacy goals, enhancing donor communications, and setting up protocols for handling breaking news and crisis communications
  • Working with the Executive Director and Director of Communications, establish annual fundraising goals, corporate donors, and individual giving, and develop strategies to execute and achieve these goals;

Pro Bono Coordinator

A license to practice law in the State of California, or commit to become a licensed attorney within one year of employment. At least 5 years experience as a pro bono attorney or a Director of Development or as a Senior Fundraiser or experience with a Pro Bono Attorney program; or similar experience, knowledge and management experience Excellent verbal and written communications skills; Superior interpersonal skills to establish and maintain working relationships; Ability to facilitate collaboration as well as ability to build and sustain productive relationships with diverse individuals, groups and organizations; Demonstrated project management skills; problem solving, planning, and organizational skills; Hands-on, results-oriented problem solver with excellent time management skills; Ability to manage an organization with diverse revenue sources and fundraising strategies; Demonstrated expertise in cultivating and soliciting major donors and growing the donor base. Demonstrated expertise in media and communications; Ability to work under pressure; Positive attitude, with ability to work both independently and as part of a team; Desire and commitment to participate in events outside of standard business hours, which may include travel outside the State of California. Experience working at a non-profit preferred.
