Civil Legal Self-Help Staff Attorney
Southern California – San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP)
SDVLP is seeking an experienced civil litigation attorney for a new civil legal self-help program. This is a full-time staff attorney position, working out of the downtown San Diego Law Library and requiring the ability to travel throughout the County. In addition to providing civil legal assistance to low-income, self-represented litigants, the staff attorney will also be responsible for supervising, training, and recruiting pro bono attorneys and other volunteers, and performing community outreach and education.
The successful candidate should be comfortable speaking with a diverse cross-section of the community and possess a gift for explaining difficult legal concepts in plain English to those representing themselves in the justice system. Assistance provided is highly practical, so the ideal candidate should be well versed in basic civil procedure, extremely comfortable with pleadings using Judicial Council and other forms, law and motion practice, and local court rules. The successful candidate will also understand and support the objectives and purposes of public interest law, and possess prior experience relating to the low-income and disadvantaged populations who are served by our organization.
Minimum qualifications include: admission to practice law in California, at least three years of civil litigation experience, a commitment to the mission of SDVLP, and excellent communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish) oral and written communication skills preferred. Salary range is $68,000 – $72,000 DOE. Medical, dental, vision, 401(K), and sick and annual leave provided.
