Work in a legal environment dedicated to equal access to justice. The Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco (JDC) has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Bi-lingual (Spanish) Client Advocate supporting our Family Law and Tax Projects.
JDC is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to low-income and indigent San Francisco residents through staff and volunteer based services. Each year more than 1,900 volunteer attorneys, interpreters, law students and college students work with JDC staff to serve nearly 8,500 indigent clients. JDC’s holistic advocacy approach seeks to address the social service needs of clients in addition to their legal needs.
About the Job:
The Client Advocate will focus on JDC’s Family Law and Tax cases, and work with two other bilingual advocates focusing on other legal areas. Client Advocates are integral members of the JDC staff, with primary responsibility for: intake and screening conversations with low-income people seeking legal help; participating in case review with JDC attorneys; following up with clients; referring and placing appropriate cases with volunteer attorneys and interpreters; and providing social service assessments and referrals. Client Advocates also coordinate services at monthly and weekly legal clinics, including recruiting and scheduling volunteers, preparing documents for the clinics, and administrative help during clinics. The Advocate will do this work on behalf of JDC’s clients, many of whom speak primarily Spanish, in cases involving family law, eviction, debt collection and taxes. Advocates also occasionally interpret for Spanish-speaking clients during meetings with attorneys.
